Area Health Education Centers for Southwest Region of Louisiana is a program in which High School students job shadow health care professionals to stimulate interest in a health care career.

Acadia St. Landry Hospital has hosted the AHEC program since 1993; it now includes a “Future Doc” program. ASLH is the first hospital to host this Future Doc Program. There were students from Lafayette, Eunice, and Church Point area who participated in this two week program with instructors from the Lafayette area. These students are mostly seniors who are anticipating a medical career.

Local School Boards and health care facilities teamed with Southwest Louisiana Area Health Education (SWLAHEC) to provide students with the opportunity to explore a career in health care.

The goal of AHEC is to lace students in a health care environment while being mentored by health care professionals. While in the program the students develop interest and explore career opportunities. The facilities are located in communities designated as primary care shortage areas.

Currently, two of ASLH department Managers are products of stimulated interest through this program:

  • Chad Labbie – X-Ray Manager
  • Brandi Comeaux – Purchasing Agent

ASLH takes pride in offering this program to local students in hopes that they will develop interest in a health care and possibly, one day, joining our staff.
